Because the machine’s expensive years happened to somebody else. These servers were leased new by companies with bigger budgets than yours; when the lease ran out they came back working, and we bought them outright at that moment’s price. They go into the racks we have run since 2004, next to everything else we sell, and the monthly figure is what the machine costs us to keep running, plus a margin — the same figure at renewal, with nothing metered on top.
When a line stops earning its rack space we retire it; we do not discount it and hope. And every machine passes our hardware scan before it is allowed onto the shelf at all, which is why the list further down only ever shows what we can hand you today.
Everything that makes it a server. The saving comes off the age of the silicon and nowhere else, so the fittings stay the enterprise fittings — and the honest asterisks, all four of them, are printed on the receipt instead of hiding in a terms page.

The second machine, kept in case the first one stops. What matters on the bad day is how recent the copy is and how fast traffic can be pointed at it — the processor barely comes into it.
