A hundred gigabits is one server holding a 100 Gbps port, or ten servers holding 10 Gbps each. Lower down the range the second column wins. Here it does not, and it does not by a distance.

And that is before the ten machines need a load balancer in front of them, ten operating systems patched behind them, and something watching which of them is unhealthy at three in the morning. The column that loses on price also loses on everything that is not price.

It reads the other way round two steps down: at 20 Gbps the extra machines are the cheaper buy, and our 20 Gbps page says so in the same arithmetic. Whichever number is smaller is the one we print.

The last column falls to $40.83 at the top, against $85.63 at 20 Gbps and $61.27 at 10. It is the only step where climbing the range makes each gigabit cheaper than the one you started on.

What it takes to actually use it

The port is the easy half. These are the things that decide whether you see the number you are paying for.

Many connections, not one

A hundred gigabits is filled by thousands of transfers running at once. Nothing in the port divides them up, but no single transfer gets near this figure in practice — the far end, the distance and the protocol run out long before the port does. If your traffic is a handful of large moves rather than many small ones, size it on what one of them really achieves.

The machine has to keep up

Serving at this rate is work for the processor and the disks as well as the network. Size the build for the traffic, not for the entry price above.

Content near the users

One server in one city is one round trip away from everywhere else. If your audience is spread, a smaller port in a second city often beats a bigger one in the first.

Is one 100 Gbps server cheaper than ten 10 Gbps servers?

Yes, and by $2,044.03 a month. One server with the port is $4,082.67; ten servers at 10 Gbps are $6,126.70. This is the only step in our range where that is true — lower down, the extra machines win.

Which servers can take a 100 Gbps port?

The Intel Xeon Silver / Gold line, and only that one. It is built in New York, Bucharest, San Francisco, Miami and Amsterdam. If you need this much bandwidth on different hardware, talk to us before ordering rather than after.

Will one download run at 100 Gbps?

No, and nothing we sell would. A single transfer is limited by far more than the port — the other end, the distance, the protocol. This capacity is for many things happening at once, which is what streaming, distribution and origin traffic look like.

Can I move up to this from a smaller port?

Only from within the same line, which already carries every step from 1 Gbps upward. Starting anywhere else means moving the machine to get here, so if 100 Gbps is somewhere in your plans it is worth starting on this line even at a smaller port.
