40 Gbps is not offered across the range. It is on Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3/v4 and Intel Xeon Silver / Gold, and nothing else — so the port decides the machine here as much as the machine decides the port.

Should I buy 40 Gbps or two servers at 20?

On price, neither — four servers at 10 Gbps is the cheapest way to reach 40, at $2,409.88 against $2,872.47 for one machine. The single port is worth its 19% when the traffic has to arrive at one address, or when nobody is going to run the thing that splits it.

Which servers can take a 40 Gbps port?

Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3/v4 and Intel Xeon Silver / Gold. The cheaper of the two starts at $73.47 for a complete machine and is built in New York, Bucharest, San Francisco, Miami and Amsterdam.

Why is there no 60 or 80 Gbps?

Because the steps follow the hardware rather than the arithmetic. The catalogue sells what the interfaces and the uplinks come in, and between 40 and 100 there is nothing in between to sell. If you need a number that is not on the list, ask — the answer will be one of these ports or more than one machine, and we will tell you which.

Is it worth going straight to 100 Gbps?

If the traffic is heading there, yes. 100 Gbps costs $1,200 more than this port and carries 2.5 times the capacity, which is why its cost per gigabit is the lowest we sell. It is also on one line only, so getting there later can mean moving machine.
