NVMe dedicated server with the drive speed measured, not promised

An NVMe dedicated server keeps your data on SSDs that reach the processor over PCIe instead of the older SATA link, so a job that waits on the disk waits less. You rent the whole machine, and the racked ones show the read speed we measured on them before you pay.

Build yours with 32 GB to 128 GB of memory, NVMe drives from 240 GB to 3.84 TB, an unmetered 1 Gbps port, in New York, Miami, San Francisco, Amsterdam and Bucharest.

01The jobs it suits

When the disk is the thing you keep waiting on

Fast storage pays off when your work reads and writes lots of small pieces at once. If your processor sits idle while a query, a save or a build crawls, the drive is usually why.

Databases that take writes all day

MySQL, PostgreSQL and MongoDB spend their time on small random reads and on flushing the log. That is the pattern NVMe handles best, so busy tables stay quick when the traffic climbs.

Game worlds that save while people play

Minecraft, Rust and ARK write the world to disk on a timer. On a slow drive that save can make the whole server hitch. On NVMe it is over before your players notice.

Build servers and CI runners

A build unpacks thousands of files, compiles them and throws most away. Your pipeline spends less time in that churn, and caches for npm, Maven or Docker layers come back fast.

Video editing and transcoding

Scrubbing through high-bitrate footage needs steady reads. The Xeon E3 and Xeon E-2286M cartridges also carry Intel graphics on the chip, with Quick Sync, the video encoder Intel builds in.

Busy sites and online shops

WordPress, Magento and forums query the database on most page views. With the data on NVMe, a sale or a spike in visitors is less likely to turn into slow pages.

A few virtual machines of your own

Proxmox VE 9 is on the install list. Several guests booting and updating at once is exactly the mixed load where a SATA drive queues up and NVMe keeps going.

Need many terabytes more than speed? A storage server takes up to 24 drives behind a hardware RAID controller. For how NVMe, SATA SSDs and hard drives differ in general, read NVMe vs SSD vs HDD.

02Configure one

The NVMe SSD server lines, each priced as a whole machine

Every NVMe build you can configure is an HPE Moonshot cartridge: a complete server of its own, with processor, memory, drives and port that nobody else uses. The first price on each line is the cheapest complete build with one NVMe drive. The second is the same build with two drives in RAID 1.

03Racked already

Fast NVMe servers you can have in about 30 minutes

These machines are built and waiting. Take one as it stands and there is no setup fee, it is yours about 30 minutes after your order is approved, and you can pay by the month or by the hour. Each card shows what our benchmark read from its drive.

If no machine shows here, every NVMe line in the table above can still be built for you.

04Your storage

One NVMe drive, or two that mirror each other

With one drive you get all of its space. With two in RAID 1, every write lands on both, so a failed drive costs you a swap and not your data. Usable space is then the size of one drive.

What you can choose

  • One NVMe drive from 240 GB up to 3.84 TB, or two of the same size in software RAID 1.
  • The drive is yours alone: no other customer's virtual disks share it.
  • Root access, and 31 operating systems to install, from Ubuntu, Debian and AlmaLinux to Windows Server and Proxmox VE.
  • An HPE iLO console in your browser with virtual media, so you can boot an installer of your own.

What these cartridges don't do

  • No hardware RAID controller. The mirror is software RAID, run by the operating system.
  • No RAID 5, 6 or 10 and no shelf of drives. For that, a storage server is the better fit.
  • No DDoS protection is sold with them, as a feature or as an extra.

Why NVMe keeps up under load

A SATA SSD speaks through AHCI, a protocol written for spinning disks: one queue of 32 commands, over a link that tops out at 600 MB/s. An NVMe drive takes up to 65,535 queues of up to 65,536 commands each, straight over PCIe. The difference shows most when many requests arrive together, which is what a database or a build does all day.

06Before you order

Questions people ask about NVMe servers

01What is an NVMe dedicated server?

It is a physical server you rent whole, whose drives are NVMe SSDs connected over PCIe rather than SATA. Ours are HPE Moonshot cartridges: the processor, memory, drives and port are yours alone, with root access.

02How much does an NVMe server cost?

Each line in the table prices its own cheapest complete build, and the same build with a second drive in RAID 1. The lowest today is $62.58 a month for Intel Xeon E3-1585L v5 Quad Core 3.00 Ghz · 32 GB DDR4 · 1 × NVMe-SSD 240 GB · 1 Gbps. A build you configure adds $29 once; a racked machine taken as it stands adds nothing.

03How much faster is NVMe than a SATA SSD?

On paper, a SATA link stops at 600 MB/s and four lanes of PCIe 3.0 at about 3,940 MB/s. In practice it depends on the drive and your workload, so we show what our own benchmark read on the racked machines instead of a multiplier. The gap is widest on many small random reads at once.

04Can I have two NVMe drives in RAID 1?

Yes. Choose RAID 1 in the configurator and the cartridge gets two drives of the same size, mirrored by software RAID. You keep the space of one drive, and a failed drive can be swapped without losing your data.

05Is there a hardware RAID controller?

Not on the NVMe cartridges. Hardware RAID is on our rack and blade servers, which take SATA and SAS drives. If you need RAID 5, 6 or 10 or many drives, look at a storage server.

06How soon can my server be running?

A racked machine is yours about 30 minutes after the order is approved. A build you configure takes 4 to 24 hours when we hold the parts, and longer when one has to be bought in. Checking the payment comes first and is the part that varies.

07Can I rent an NVMe server by the hour?

Yes, any racked machine taken as it stands. Its card shows the hourly price beside the monthly one. A build made to your choice is billed by the month.

08Where are the NVMe servers?

New York, Miami, San Francisco, Amsterdam and Bucharest. The table shows which cities each line is built in. Amsterdam and Bucharest are billed in euros.

09Is the bandwidth metered?

No. Nothing meters the 1 Gbps port and there is no overage charge. You can raise the port to 10 Gbps in the configurator.

10Who helps me if something breaks?

Open the chat and our AI assistant answers in seconds. It can look at your server and its hardware for you, and it brings in a person whenever you ask. A failed drive is replaced within four hours of your report, under the service agreement.
