Configure encoding settings

Go to Settings → Output and adjust your bitrate settings:

  • Video bitrate — 500–1200 kbps delivers a high-quality stream. A good rule of thumb is to have your upload speed at least three times your total output bitrate. Use x264 as your encoder.
  • Audio bitrate — 128 kbps is recommended for high quality; 64–96 kbps for lower-bandwidth connections.

You can also set a Recording Path to save a local copy of your stream.

FAQ

Common questions about configuring OBS Studio for live streaming with Primcast.

Which stream type should I select in OBS?

Select Custom Streaming Server from the Stream Type drop-down. This allows you to enter your Primcast RTMP address and stream key manually.

Where do I find my Primcast RTMP URL and stream key?

Your RTMP URL, stream key, username, and password are available in your Primcast account dashboard and in the activation email you received when your account was created.

What bitrate should I use for streaming?

A total bitrate of 500–1200 kbps is recommended for most streams. Make sure your internet upload speed is at least three times your total output bitrate. Use x264 as your video encoder and 128 kbps for audio.

Can OBS record locally while streaming?

Yes. In the Output settings, set a Recording Path to save a local copy of your stream at the same time. This is useful for archiving or editing after the broadcast.

What should I do if the stream fails to connect?

Verify that your RTMP URL, stream key, username, and password are entered correctly. Make sure your Primcast video service is active and that OBS has a stable internet connection. Contact our support team via live chat if the issue persists.
