No trick, and no catch on the contract. We own the racks, we buy the hardware outright when it comes off lease, and we do not pay anyone a margin in between. That is the difference, and it goes to you.
We set all four of these up regularly. The question is never how quick the server is - it is what the job is actually waiting on. Once you know that, the rest of the money is easy to stop spending.
A backup server that waits
This is the second machine, the one you keep in case the first one stops. It holds a copy of your data and it waits. On the bad day, what decides how quickly you are running again is how recent that copy is and how fast your traffic can be pointed at it. The processor barely comes into it. The real danger to a backup server is that it looks expensive one month and somebody cancels it - so make it cheap, and it is still there when it is finally needed.
What you need: one machine with the same memory and disk space as the live one, in a different city from it. Full access, and a port nobody else is sharing.

A test machine is there to tell you what will happen when you push the change. If it is quicker than the real thing, it tells you good news that is not true: the slow page loads fine, the overnight job finishes with time to spare, and you find out on Monday morning instead. What you want is something as close to your live server as we can get. Because we still stock plenty of older processors, that is usually a match rather than a guess.
What you need: tell us what you are running now. We will find you the same generation of machine, or say straight out that we cannot.
Ask for a matchSoftware you pay for by the core
Some databases and virtualisation software charge you for every core in the machine, and that licence usually costs more than the server does inside the first year. It turns the normal advice upside down: what you want is a small number of quick cores, not a big pile of ordinary ones. We keep machines with four, six and eight cores at high clock speeds, which is the one shape you cannot get from a host whose smallest option starts at sixteen.
What you need: add up the licence first, then choose the server. Ask us for the low-core, high-speed machines and we will send the short list with prices against it.

A second DNS server. A box you log into before you reach any of the others. A VPN endpoint. Something that checks your sites every minute and tells you when one stops answering. None of them will ever be busy. They only have to be switched on, somewhere else, and not vanish because a shared host had a bad night. Paying for room to grow is paying for room this job is never going to use.
