GoDaddy alternative • VPS vs dedicated

GoDaddy retired dedicated servers. We didn't.

GoDaddy now sells virtual private servers only - their dedicated server pages redirect straight to VPS Hosting, and existing dedicated customers were moved onto shared, virtualized hardware. Primcast still rents you the whole physical machine: real cores, real RAM, a published port speed and a price that never jumps at renewal. From $5.00/mo.

Their VPS vs our dedicated server, at the same price

Three of GoDaddy's most-bought VPS plans, paired with the Primcast bare metal machine that costs the same or less. GoDaddy figures are their published self-managed VPS prices; the second number is what the plan renews at.

  • RAM8 GB
  • Storage32 GB SSD

  • TenancyShared host, KVM guest
$59.99 / mo at renewal - $34.99 on a 3-yr prepay

Same money as our M300 only while the prepay lasts - then it is $25.59/mo more.

Performance tier
Primcast M510
  • CPUIntel Xeon D-1548, 8 cores / 16 threads
  • RAM32 GB DDR4

  • TenancyShared host, KVM guest
$104.99 / mo at renewal - $64.99 on a 3-yr prepay

Their "High Performance" entry - half the RAM of our M510 and $35.81/mo more once it renews.

GoDaddy specifications and USD prices taken from their public VPS Hosting plan table (self-managed tier), July 2026. Primcast prices are the standard monthly configurator prices for the listed build; storage, RAM, port speed and management level are configurable and priced per option.

Where the Primcast price sits slightly above GoDaddy's prepay figure, the machine is materially larger - twice the memory, twice the threads, ECC memory or hardware RAID 1 - and it stays at that price when their promotional term ends.

Why a dedicated server beats a VPS

A VPS is a good product for small, bursty workloads. Once your application matters, virtualization stops being free - here is what you get back by moving to bare metal.

No hypervisor tax

A VPS runs your kernel inside a KVM guest, so every syscall, interrupt and disk write pays a virtualization overhead before it reaches the hardware. On bare metal your OS talks to the CPU and the NVMe controller directly - the same silicon delivers measurably more work per dollar.

No noisy neighbours

Providers oversubscribe vCPUs because most guests idle. When they don't, your threads queue behind someone else's backup job and your p99 latency doubles for reasons no metric on your own server explains. A dedicated machine has exactly one workload on it: yours.

Real cores, not scheduler shares

"8 vCPU" is a scheduling entitlement, not eight processors. Primcast quotes physical parts - Xeon D-1548 8 cores / 16 threads, Xeon Gold 6130 16 cores, Atom C2750 8 cores - and every one of them is exclusively yours, with the full cache, the full memory bandwidth and the full clock.

Storage and I/O you don't share

VPS disks sit behind a shared queue, which is why virtualized I/O is the first thing to collapse under load. A dedicated server gives you the whole NVMe or SSD device - and hardware RAID 1, larger arrays and JBOD layouts that a VPS product simply cannot offer.

Hardware-level control

Run your own hypervisor - Proxmox VE 9 and VMware are installable OS choices here - load custom kernel modules, use nested virtualization, containers, GPUs and NPUs. A GoDaddy VPS gives you root "up to the operating system level"; below that line the machine is theirs.

Single tenancy for security

Isolation on a VPS is a software boundary shared with strangers. On dedicated hardware there is no co-tenant, no shared kernel surface and no side-channel neighbour - which is what auditors want to hear about payment, health and customer data.

Why Primcast?

GoDaddy decided virtualization was cheaper to operate and moved its dedicated customers onto shared hosts. We took the other road: enterprise HPE and Dell hardware, one tenant per machine, in New York, Miami, San Francisco, Amsterdam and Bucharest. Your services are monitored by automated systems and real humans 24/7, our engineers are trained on the applications you actually run, and migration off GoDaddy is free and planned around your downtime window - not ours.
